Abstract:
Deals with changes in the position of the Jews in Europe throughout the Middle Ages. In the ancient period and during the early Middle Ages the Jews were relatively secure, since their services were needed for the economy and their existence was necessary for Christian theology. During the 11th-13th centuries they became a hated minority whose existence was disturbing, especially after the contents of the rabbinical writings, disclosed by converts, revealed a continuous adversity toward Christianity. But even the theologians who approved their expulsion (when it was felt to be necessary) did not condone their mass extermination, which was endorsed by modern antisemitism.
