    Angaben zur Quelle: (1995) 155-165
    Keywords: Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)
Abstract: Criticizes the view, embraced by many Orthodox and ultra-Orthodox Jews, that comparison between the Holocaust and other genocides is tantamount to sacrilege. Argues that this view places the Holocaust outside history and beyond human comprehension, and that uniqueness is meaningless unless it is deduced from comparisons with other similar cases. Examines five conditions, whose presence supposedly made the Holocaust unique: ancient hatred, a brutal dictatorship, a zealous and proactive bureaucracy, a technology which enabled the efficient execution of the genocide, and a war or conflict in whose shadow the genocide could take place. Argues that since 1945 there have been places where similar conditions have been present. Mentions the Muslims in Bosnia as an example: they might in the future be subject to ethnic cleansing, and, not having anywhere to flee, be wiped out by the Serbians and the Croatians. Emphasizes that the Holocaust can be explained and even understood, both in regard to the victims and also the perpetrators. Shows implicit contradictions in the ultra-Orthodox position, which states that the Shoah was a result of the sins of the Jews. For non-Orthodox Jews, the questions are complex. Although the Shoah is comparable to other genocidal events, many factors make it qualitatively different: its extremeness was unique; the Nazis had purely ideological (antisemitic) motives; and the Jews had a special role in Western society, which builds on ancient Jewish culture. Concludes that a comparative approach is necessary to avoid future disasters, and it is possible without obfuscating unique traits.

Abstract: Enumerates the mathematicians who were dismissed from universities in all of Nazi Germany, most for racial, some for political reasons, and describes their fate: emigration or death in the Holocaust. Discusses the promotion of mediocre scholars who were Nazis, both at the University of Munich and the Bavarian Academy of Sciences, and their agitation against Jewish colleagues. Traces the biographies, the scientific accomplishments, and the persecution of three Munich (Jewish) mathematicians: Pringsheim (1850-1941) emigrated to Switzerland in 1939; Liebmann (b. 1874) died a natural death in 1939; Hartogs (b. 1874) committed suicide in 1943 because he could no longer bear the constant humiliations. In November 1938 the Nazi-appointed president ousted all Jews from the Academy, despite the almost unanimous opposition of the other members.

Abstract: Vrba recalls how in January 1944, as a prisoner in Birkenau, he heard of work on the extension of the railway from the old ramp in Auschwitz to the gas chambers, in preparation for the arrival of a million Jews from Hungary. In April he and his comrade Alfred Wetzler escaped and succeeded in reaching Slovakia, with the express purpose of informing the world about the nature of Auschwitz. In particular, they wanted to warn the Hungarian Jews themselves. Through the Slovak Jewish Council, their report indeed reached the West and also the Jewish Council in Budapest, but the Council did not inform the mass of Jews. Argues that this was part of the misguided policy of both the Bratislava and the Budapest Jewish Councils to appease the Nazis by cooperation and bribes. They did not see that the efficiency of the Nazi extermination machine depended on keeping it secret from the intended victims, who went to their deaths unresisting.
