Abstract: Takes issue with historian Jacob Katz's explanation (in the Festschrift for Yitzhak Baer, 1961) of why German Jewry committed mass suicide in 1096 while Polish Jewry did not follow suit during the Cossack rebellion in 1648-49 - that the religious commandment to sanctify God's name through martyrdom ("Kiddush Hashem") had undergone a spiritualization and was no longer considered as a halakhic requirement. Shows that rabbinic works in 16th-17th century Poland still called for Jews to choose death rather than convert. But the Cossack rebellion was not an attack on Judaism nor an attempt to convert the Jews. It was an economic, social, and political attack against the Polish nobility, its allies and employees, of which many were Jews. Contends that the Jews realized what the motivations of the Cossacks were, and therefore they attempted to save their lives if at all possible, and not to kill themselves. Testimonies of eyewitnesses did not relate to the murdered victims as martyrs nor speak of sanctification of God's name. It was in writings after the events (especially by Natan Nata Hannover in "Yeven metzulah, " who Katz quotes extensively) that the victims were depicted as holy martyrs and compared to the victims of the 1096 Crusader massacre. See the response by Katz, "More on 'Between 1096 and 1648-1649'" ["Zion" 62, 1 (1997) 23-29] and Fram's reply [Ibid. 31-46].
