Kurzfassung:
Discusses works produced by Stein during her middle period (roughly, from World War I to just before the emergence of the Final Solution - primarily the works collected as "Painted Lace and Other Pieces 1914-1937") and the discourse of Jewish social scientists at that time who were preoccupied with studying the sociological aspects of Jewish life and Jewish identity. Examines the contradictory aspects of Stein's relation to her Jewishness as evinced in her writings. She identified with Judaism as a culture, but not with the religion.
