Abstract:
Examines political antisemitic outbursts and violence during the 1930s in Algeria and the Jewish reactions to them. Mentions the antisemitic press, published by the local French radical right. Surveys the effects of the Vichy anti-Jewish legislation in Algeria, including the abrogation of the Crémieux decree, a numerus clausus law, and discrimination in the army. Estimates that 3,000 Algerian Jews were deported to Nazi camps. Mentions the participation of Algerian Jews in the resistance, especially in support of the Anglo-American landing in November 1942.
