Abstract: Traces the career of Régis, the symbol of Algerian anti-Judaism at the turn of the 20th century. Antisemitism was strong in Algeria from the time of the granting of French citizenship to Algerian Jews in 1870, especially in Spanish and Italian immigrant circles. Régis was born in 1873. As a law student in Algiers in 1897, he organized a strike against a Jewish teacher; the teacher was removed and Régis was expelled. He took over the "Ligue antijuive" and established the paper "L'Antijuif algérien", in which he called for the murder of Jews. In anti-Jewish riots, instigated by him in Algiers in 1898-99, two Jews were killed and hundreds of Jewish shops plundered. In 1898, as the newly elected mayor of Algiers, Régis clamped down on Jewish businesses in an attempt to force the Jews to leave. However, he was soon removed from office because of abuse against French colonial administrators. In 1900 he was re-elected as mayor, but gave up the job for fear of retribution by his debtors. In the 1902 communal elections, the anti-Jews suffered great losses, and by 1904 Régis had disappeared from the public scene. His end is unknown.
