Abstract:
Hedin, the famous Swedish explorer and travel writer, was an admirer of Nazism and had connections with leading Nazis such as the Minister of the Interior, Frick. Many Jews therefore turned to him to intervene on their behalf. He seldom answered their letters, perhaps because, like most Swedes, and like the Swedish government which refused to take in refugees, he was blind to Nazi crimes and the danger to the Jews. He did intervene warmly for his friend, the geographer Alfred Philippson; Philippson was deported to Theresienstadt, but because of Hedin's intervention he was not sent on to Auschwitz. At the request of Schoeps, seconded by Hedin's sister, Hedin wrote a lukewarm letter to Frick on behalf of an emigration permit for Schoeps' parents, but did not pursue the matter. The old couple were deported and perished.
