Abstract:
Demonstrates that in the Portuguese colony of Goa, the Inquisition, which lasted from 1560 to 1812, closely resembled the Inquisition in the mother country, including the attitudes toward and treatment of New Christians. The latter were persecuted for Judaizing, e.g. keeping the Jewish Sabbath and dietary laws. In Goa, New Christians constituted a disproportionate number of those executed after being condemned. As in Portugal, people were accused of Judaizing in order to settle personal scores or to confiscate their wealth. Old Christians continued to look down on New Christians even after many generations. Such discrimination led to social cohesion and endogamy among New Christians.
