Abstract: An essay in honor of E.P. Sanders, who coined the term "common Judaism" (or “normal Judaism”) as a social formation. It denotes what the people known in the ancient period as “Jews” ("Ioudaioi", "Iudaei") commonly did in the fulfillment of what they believed to be the laws of their God. This Judaism was not only common but also normative, in the sense that it denotes what Jews were expected by non-Jewish society to do in fulfillment of those laws. Examines works of Latin and Greek writers (referring to the texts collected and edited by Menachem Stern) to investigate common Jewish practices performed by the Jewish populace both in Judea and abroad during the 1st century. Relates to and takes issue with some of the views expounded by E.P. Sanders.
