Abstract:
Contends that the Book of Judith was written by a Sadducee during the reign of Queen Salome Alexandra. Posits that the author used the story of Judith and Holofernes to depict a confrontation between the Hasmonean Queen and King Tigranes of Armenia. whose army was set to destroy the Seleucid kingdom, had overtaken Syria, and had invaded some parts of Eretz Israel. Queen Salome saved the country by sending a delegation with valuable gifts to Tigranes. Soon afterwards, both Armenia and large parts of the Middle East were overtaken by the Roman army. The article relates Tigranes' military campaigns, describes the politics in the Hasmonean kingdom, and severely criticizes its Pharisee regime. Refers, also, to Josephus's depiction of Queen Salome's reign.
