Abstract:
In January 1934 Rosenberg was given responsibility for the Nazi party's "philosophical" education; indirectly, this appointment granted him the power to shape youth education in Germany. This appointment alerted the Catholic Church, which also laid a claim to the minds of the youth. The Church initiated publications defending its doctrine against Rosenberg's neo-paganism. Examines the discourse on the relationship between Christianity and Judaism as it unfolded in two Catholic educational pamphlets: "Katechismuswahrheiten" and "Nathanaelfrage". The defense proved to be rather ambivalent, because the booklets had to adopt the Nazi racist rhetoric; e.g. while asserting the Jewish origins of Jesus and Christianity's Jewish roots, they endorsed Nazi racial antisemitism and anti-Jewish politics. The booklets defended "good" biblical Jews but declared "bad" modern Jews as being degenerate and "bolshevik". Such writings could not counter antisemitism or foster solidarity with German Jews.
