Abstract:
Discusses the intensive preoccupation with language and the emphasis on the importance of words in Appelfeld's novel. A latent theme in the work is the manipulative possibilities inherent in words, and their consequences. The novel depicts a sanatorium in Austria where the Polish Jewish inmates are being prepared for deportation to the East by use of the euphemistic language of Nazi propaganda (e.g. "resettlement, " "sanitization, " "productive labor").
