Abstract:
Presents the text of 15 documents (written between 1990-95) containing the correspondence between the American historian Peter Hayes, who came to the conclusion that IG-Farben chose Auschwitz for the location of its Buna plant because of its geographical suitability, and only subsequently, in February 1941, decided on the employment of concentration camp labor; and Hans Deichmann, the nephew of Georg von Schnitzler, a member of the Central Committee of IG-Farben, who remembers being present at a luncheon conversation in the fall of 1940 between his uncle and another Central Committee member, Fritz ter Meer, at which they decided on Auschwitz because of the availability of cheap labor from the camp. Hayes comments that even though, in his view, IG-Farben did not originally consider using slave labor, this was an inevitable result from the choice of the site.
