Abstract:
The polemical works of the apostate Alfonso of Valladolid (formerly Abner of Burgos) are an example of the "new missionizing" movement which began in the mid-13th century. Christian arguments were based on an appeal to abstract reason and on rabbinic literature, which became possible due to the Jewish apostates who had knowledge of Jewish sources and traditions. Alfonso's adept use of rabbinic texts to prove that the Messiah had already come had a demoralizing effect on the Jews despite Jewish attempts at rebuttal.
