Abstract:
Discusses antisemitism in 19th-century Europe, including anti-Jewish stereotypes and the myth of a Jewish world conspiracy, describing the reactions of Theodor Herzl. Herzl first encountered antisemitism in 1882 when he read Eugen Dühring’s "Die Judenfrage", which he described as an "abominable" work. His first reaction to antisemitism came in 1883, when he gave up his membership in a Viennese student organization after an antisemitic student demonstration. Herzl blamed the Jews themselves for antisemitism and favored assimilation. However, after reporting on the Dreyfus Affair as a foreign correspondent in France, he returned to Vienna to promote Zionism as the answer to the "Jewish question".
