Abstract:
Describes reactions in Europe to the Mortara Affair - the kidnapping of a Jewish boy from Bologna by pontifical police in 1858 (he was secretly baptized by a Christian servant when he was one year old). Surveys extant literature on this subject and on forced conversions in Europe from the Middle Ages up to the 19th century, describing some famous cases. In the mid-19th century, Pope Pius IX, shocked by the French Revolution, promoted anti-liberal movements and manifested hostility toward Jews, and forced conversions multiplied. Discusses reactions in the European press. States that important consequences were the change of Napoleon III's policy towards the papacy and the growth of the anti-clerical movement.
