Abstract:
Discusses the works of two Polish rabbis: Kalonimus Kalmish Shapira of Piaseczno (1888-1943) and Yehoshua Moshe Aronzon of Sanniki (1910-1995). Shapira, a hasidic rebbe who lived in Warsaw and was interned in the ghetto, was killed in the Budzyń labor camp in late 1943. In the sermons he delivered in the ghetto, which were published after the war as "Esh kodesh" ("Holy Fire"), he exhorted his followers to look for God in every situation and use their suffering to connect with Him, since God is with the Jews in their sorrow. Aronzon, a village rabbi, wrote "Alei merorim" ("Of Bitterness"), which includes a diary, responsa, and Holocaust theology, while interned in the Konin labor camp and after the war. The work includes descriptions of efforts to fulfill religious commandments, as well as responsa dealing with halakhic dilemmas faced by the Jews in Konin and in Auschwitz, to where he was deported in 1943.
