Abstract:
Based on interviews with thirty perpetrators' children and eighteen children of SS officers, explores the psychological reactions of German offspring to their parents' deeds. In most cases, the parents did not talk about their role in the Holocaust, and the children did not try to find out about it. Once they knew, the children tried to make a distinction between themselves and "evil" (i.e. "they did it, I didn't"). The offspring found different ways to repress or "normalize" the evil events of the Holocaust. In rare cases, some engaged in a "working through" process, which led to a certain ability to "live with" the past rather than ignore it.
