Abstract:
Discusses the trial in Ansbach in 1712 of a court Jew, Elkan Fraenkel, who was punished with a public lashing and a lifetime prison sentence (he died eight years later at the age of 67). Although the trial followed contemporary norms, Fraenkel was condemned for having exceeded the norms for Jews (i.e. rising above his station), failing to recognize the limits of political activity allowed to Jews. This event occurred despite progress in the fields of economics and diplomatic cooperation between Christians and Jews.
