Antisemitism History 1800-2000
Abstract:
Discusses the place of antisemitism in French political and ideological confrontations from the late 18th century until the 1930s. The Boulangist populist movement, the anti-Dreyfus campaign (with Édouard Drumont as a major antisemitic protagonist), and the right-wing clerical nationalism represented by Maurice Barrès targeted the Jews as the main enemies of France. Focuses on the difficult position of prominent "state Jews" who became the scapegoats in these political controversies. Examines the cases of Alfred Naquet (himself a Jew, but an ideologue of Boulangism), the "Dreyfusard" Joseph Reinach, and Léon Blum, leader of the Front Populaire in the 1930s and prime minister of France.
