Antisemitism History 1800-2000
Abstract:
Discusses a story by the German writer Wilhelm Rüstow found in a letter he wrote to the Countess Sophie von Hatzfeldt in 1863, describing a love triangle set in the biblical period. The protagonists are: Samson (=Rüstow), Ezekiel (=Ferdinand Lassalle), and Delilah (=the Countess). In the story, Samson kills Ezekiel. Lassalle died a year later in a duel; the countess cut off relations with Rüstow, who later committed suicide. Examines the significance of the tale on the background of social and political unrest and Judeophobia in mid-19th century Germany, which was not yet an expression of antisemitism but rather a precondition for the antisemitism which developed later. A Hebrew translation of the story is given on pp. 149-151.
