Abstract:
At the beginning of the war, 60% of the population of Chęciny (a town in the Świętokrzyskie region) were Jews. In 1940, out of 235 handicraft and retail shops, 209 were owned by Jews. The majority of the Jewish population were barely making a living. In spring 1941, the Germans established a ghetto; 3,000 Jews were interned in its cramped quarters. A dozen or so Jews were hidden by neighbors or friends. Some Poles helped the Jews in the ghetto by supplying them with food. In April 1942, 500 Jews were transported to the Hasag ammunition factory in Skarżysko-Kamienna. On 12 September 1942, the ghetto was liquidated, and the remaining Jews were transported to Treblinka.
