Abstract:
Describes the preparation and execution of the liquidation of the Kielce ghetto in August 1942, led by SS and police units. The Germans also used auxiliary units and terrorized Jewish policemen to carry out the massive deportation. The tactic used was a combination of terror as a "disciplining measure" with coercion of Jewish officials (mainly Judenrat members and police) to collaborate with the occupiers. During the "Action" which took place between 20-24 August, ca. 1,500 Jews were killed on the spot. Ca. 15,000 were sent to Treblinka, where they were killed in a few hours. Ca. 1,500 Jews remained in the town for forced labor; ca. 500 fled and survived. Underlines the bestiality of the "Action" which facilitated a quick deportation of the Jews, as well as the similarity with methods of deportation in other towns.
