Abstract:
States that only in the 1970s did the distance from the Nazi period make it possible for German writers to probe their active or passive complicity in the Holocaust. Germans had defended themselves from this confrontation by fantasizing a normal, even idyllic or heroic personal past. Examines three novels - Bachmann's "Malina", Johnson's "Jahrestage", and Weiss's "Ästhetik des Widerstands" - which present, and then, each in its own way, destroy these fantasies.
