Abstract:
A paper given at an international colloquium, June 1982. Traces Crémieux's struggle for the abolition of the humiliating oath "More Judaico" imposed on Jews, in which he succeeded in 1844. His intervention in the blood libel of Damascus (1840) and in the Mortara case (1860) were among the factors leading to the founding of the Alliance Israélite Universelle (1860). Describes, also, the situation of Serbian, Bulgarian, and Romanian Jews, and Crémieux's efforts to secure their emancipation as part of the Berlin peace treaty of 1878. Pp. 260-272 contain previously unpublished letters by Crémieux on these subjects.
