Abstract:
Discusses Horkheimer's and Adorno's analysis of antisemitism and criticizes their thesis that oppression arises from typical psychological processes in which the victims (Jews, women, etc.) are interchangeable. Argues that this thesis ignores the real historical experience of oppression and the differences within and between oppressed groups. Points out that Horkheimer and Adorno appear to accept the dominant group's concept of the oppressed group as closer to nature, a happy state which the dominant group had to renounce as the price of its domination and for which it envies and hates the oppressed group. Thus, their theory stands in opposition to the oppressed group's struggle for emancipation, which cannot be achieved without power.
