Abstract:
Discusses the writings of three 19th-century German historians of the ancient period: Johann Gustav Droysen, Theodor Mommsen, and Eduard Meyer. Asserts that their historiography of ancient Judaism reflects the political development of 19th-century Germany, which elaborated a narrow form of nationalism which excluded "internal enemies, " among them the Jews. The most conservative in his opinions was Eduard Meyer, who maintained that intercultural exchange destroys the essence of the German nation. Concludes that this type of ethnocentrism eventually paved the way for the radical antisemitism and racial politics of the Nazi regime.
