Abstract:
Analyzes Shakespeare's "Merchant of Venice" in order to provide further evidence for the author's thesis [put forward in "Shakespeare, Shylock and the Marrano Factor, " Midstream 31, 9 (Nov 1985) - see Vol. 1, no. 1209] that Shakespeare was a Marrano and that the play was written not as an antisemitic tract, but to reassure Christian authorities that Marranos were trustworthy. Contends that Antonio and Portia are Conversos who have succeeded in assimilation in Christian society and that the play's tension revolves around their success as opposed to the failure of the professing Jew. Jessica's apostasy is the play's pivot - only then does Shylock become a raging avenger. Concludes that the drama is less about money or revenge than about the anguish of conversion. See reactions in "Midstream" 34, 1 (Jan 1988) 43-50.
