Abstract:
Discusses and compares various editions of Hegel's writings from the Frankfurt era (1797-1800), published posthumously, particularly the recent two editions by Olivier Depré and Robert Legros (1997). Contends that the criticism of Depré's work by Myriam Bienenstock [in an article in "Revue de Métaphysique et de Morale" 4 (1998)] is unjustified. Asserts that it is vital to distinguish between the biological-racial form of anti-Judaism and that of Hegel which was essentially a criticism of Jewish theology. Summarizes certain aspects of Hegel's opposition, such as the symbolic roles of such biblical figures as Noah, Nimrod, Abraham, and Moses. Reviews Hegel's critique of Kant and admires the presentation by Legros, who, inspired by Levinas, criticizes Hegel's interpretation of the separation in Jewish thought between the spiritual and material world. Nevertheless, the authors approve of Legros' objective presentation of Hegel's beliefs regarding the Jews.
