Abstract:
Describes the case of the martyrdom of Sol Hachuel, a 16-year-old Jewish girl from Tangier who was executed in Fez, Morocco, in 1834. The Muslims claimed that she had converted to Islam and then returned to Judaism, which justified her murder according to Islamic law. Discusses contemporary works on her martyrdom: a report by Rabbi Avner Yisrael Hazarfati in 1879; a lamentation by Rabbi Yedidia Monsonego of Fez; a book by Eugenio Maria Romero, "El martirio de la joven Hachuel, ó, la heroina hebrea" (1837); and a chapter in A. de Chypre Rey's "Souvenir d'un voyage au Maroc" (1844). Discusses, also, a Hebrew essay by Rabbi Yosef Ben-Na'im written in 1931, and a Hebrew poem by Erez Biton (1979), both of which appear in this article. Notes variations on the events of 1834 in all these works, as well as the manner in which they build the character of Sol Hachuel as a cultural heroine.
