Abstract:
Discusses why Richard Wagner's works should not be played by the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra because of his extreme antisemitism and Hitler's worship of Wagner. On the morrow of the "Kristallnacht" pogrom, the musicians of the Israeli Philharmonic decided to boycott Wagner. Since the Second World War the question has arisen again and again. At the time this article was written a referendum was about to take place amongst the orchestra's subscribers in Israel. [The majority voted against performing Wagner's works - ed.] Quotes from Wagner's antisemitic writings, and compares them with texts from Hitler's writings and "Der Stürmer". Emphasizes the uniqueness and innovativeness of Wagner's antisemitism in the cultural world of the 19th century.
