Abstract:
The young crypto-Jew Isaac de Castro Tartas was arrested in 1644 in Portuguese Brazil (where he had moved from Dutch Brazil for unknown reasons) and accused of Judaizing. He was sent to Lisbon for trial and in 1647 was burned at stake. In 1645, as a prisoner of the Portuguese Inquisition, Castro wrote an extensive explanation of his views and actions, in which he, despite his previous baptism and Catholic education, admitted to being a practicing Jew. Pp. 236-246 contain the Latin original text of his statement and an English translation.
