Abstract:
Discusses the research project "Antisemitism among American Labor", carried out by the Institute of Social Research (Frankfurt School) in the USA in 1944-45, which was never published. It consisted of 4,500 questionnaires distributed to American blue-collar workers; of those, ca. 500 were given "screened interviews". The goal was to determine the level of antisemitic attitudes toward Jews in the context of World War II and the Holocaust. The conclusion of the study was that the Holocaust exacerbated antisemitic attitudes rather than abating them. The work can be regarded as a link between Adorno's and Horkheimer's the "Dialectic of Enlightenment" (1944) and "The Authoritarian Personality" (1950), in which the authors revised their hypothesis on the relevance of antisemitism for the understanding of society.
