Abstract:
Objects to the approach which treats the Holocaust as a unique episode, unlinked to previous Christian antisemitism and to German history. Objects, also, to the approach which views it as a universal tragedy and just another example of genocide. States that the Holocaust should be regarded as a transmutation of a persisting tradition. Examines attempts to give an authentic response to the Holocaust (by scholars, Germans, Christians, and Jews) according to this criterion, urging both German and Christian scholars to face the issue of historical responsibility and guilt. The postwar responsibility of Jews is to preserve the memory of the victims, and to adopt support for Zionism as a reaffirmation of life.
