Abstract:
Horizontal collaboration was the term used in France after the Second World War to refer to women who had allegedly engaged in romantic liaisons with occupying German soldiers. For reasons that will be clear in this chapter, I am intentionally referring to this historically inflammatory term. I am well aware of the controversies involved in the use of such a phrase, but part of the point of this analysis, and its title, is to note that the rhetoric on Esther has hardly been any less controversial, or indeed inflammatory! Also, this study on proposed problems in reading Esther belongs in a collection of studies published under the name “postcolonialism. ” This is because the different historic contexts that are brought into dialogue are here considered significant interlocutors precisely because of the questions raised by postcolonial studies.
