Abstract:
Western hostility to Israel embodies fundamentally medieval patterns and attitudes. Medieval Christianity saw the Jew as "emblematic of all that was evil or imperfect", and defined the proper social place of Jews as "perpetual servitude". From the 19th century on, left-wing thinkers espoused this attitude in secular form, and today Israel must play the role of the acquiescent inferior in external affairs. This attitude was expressed clearly during the 1982 Lebanon War.
