Abstract:
Examines Horkheimer and Adorno's socio-philosophical research study "Elements of Antisemitism" which is part of their book "Dialectic of Enlightenment". In seven sections, which are interrelated, they offer explanations for the phenomenon of antisemitism, and demonstrate the decline of enlightened civilization into the barbarism of totalitarianism. The latter evokes radical antisemitism, as witnessed in the case of Nazi Germany. The following subjects are discussed: fascism vs. liberalism in regard to Jews; the urge in society to make everyone the same (and to be rid of those who are different; e.g. the Jews); the Jew as society's scapegoat; the Christian tradition of religious antisemitism; psychological causes of antisemitism - mimesis and projection; and stereotyping. Both of the authors were pessimistic in regard to the chances of combatting antisemitism successfully.
