Abstract: Discusses antisemitism in 4th century Antioch on the Orontes (today in Turkey) where local Christians were strongly attracted to the Jewish community which formed about 15% of the population. Church leaders initiated a campaign against Judaism, to separate the two religions. Analyzes the extreme anti-Jewish expressions of John Chrysostom, then a preacher in the Antioch Church. While disagreeing with those who excuse his hostility toward Judaism, attempts to explain the theological and psychological motives for Christian anti-Judaism. Contends that this hatred arises from the fact that Christians are dependent on a Jewish holy book (the Old Testament) and from disappointment of their expectations for the conversion of the Jews.
