Abstract:
Stöcker (1835-1909) was the first German politician to use antisemitism as a political instrument. After the economic crisis which began in 1873, he founded the Christian Social Party which represented Protestant conservatism. Describes his political career, the importance of antisemitic slogans in his campaigns, and his success in attracting a mass audience. Despite his political influence, he aroused opposition in some German conservative circles which considered his demagogy dangerous. From 1880, the influence of Stöcker's party declined due to political changes and the rise of more extremist antisemitic parties.
