Abstract: Established in 1982 at the Technical University of Berlin, the Center's original foci were on antisemitism, German-Jewish history, and the Holocaust. Claims that because antisemitism can serve as the paradigm for research into social prejudice and group conflict, the Center cannot confine itself to the narrower topic of antisemitism; rather it understands itself much more as a central institution for general and growing theoretical and methodological research on prejudice, discrimination and migration processes, and minority conflicts. Describes the Center's publications, its Internet journal (http://www.tu-berlin.de/zfa.html), and the library, which contains a large amount of antisemitic writings, an extensive collection of newspaper clippings, and documents of the Nuremberg Trials. An appendix (pp. 92-95) lists books and tapes released by the Center in recent years.

Abstract: Traces how Muslim antisemitism, politically generated by the Middle East conflict, has adopted and integrated traditional European antisemitic stereotypes, including racial prejudice, which was initially foreign to the Islamic world. Emphasizes the importance of conspiracy theories in anti-Israeli Islamist strategies. The "Protocols of the Elders of Zion" have been republished with state support in Iran and are commonly presented in Muslim media as "proof" of Zionist plans to take over the world. The "Protocols", present in all Islamist media contexts, are used with particular aggressivity by the Sweden-based "Radio Islam" over the Internet and are also quoted in Hamas's charter of 1988. Discusses Malaysian Prime Minister Mahatir Mohamad's recent propagation of conspiracy theories. Presents examples of antisemitic programs on Syrian, Lebanese, Egyptian, and Iranian television, and denounces the flagrantly anti-Jewish series "Diaspora" and "Horseman without a Horse", broadcast in 2002 and 2003. Concludes by condemning an award-winning book for teenagers, published recently in Germany, which, echoing Islamist views, portrays the Jews as fundamentally evil and denies Israel's right to exist.
Note: Appeared also in "Islamfeindschaft und ihr Kontext" (2009) .

    Language: German
    Year of publication: 2007
Titel der Quelle: Neue Gesellschaft - Frankfurter Hefte
    Angaben zur Quelle: 54,9 (2007) 17-21
    Keywords: Antisemitism ; Anti-Zionism
Abstract: Examines four types of Jew-hatred: religious anti-Judaism and racist antisemitism (neither of them widespread in Germany today), "secondary" antisemitism (e.g. resentment for being made to feel guilt for the Holocaust), and anti-Zionism. Discusses the question when legitimate criticism of Israel's treatment of the Palestinians becomes illegitimate antisemitism: when it is one-sided, ignoring Israel's need for security; when it involves stereotypes, such as alleged Jewish vengefulness or the arrogance of "the Chosen People"; and when it is generalized to all Jews worldwide. Comments that antisemitism is seldom an end in itself but usually serves a political purpose; it is not an isolated phenomenon but a symptom of the state of the society.
