Abstract:
A paper delivered at the conference "American Jews: Dreams and Realities, " New York, spring 1991. Attempts to predict how American Jewry will develop in the next generation. Contends that a rise in antisemitism can be expected in the USA. Black antisemitism is growing, and its very existence legitimates the antisemitism of other groups. Due to the "breakdown of the center" (polarization of society) which is going on in the USA, the influence of subgroups will increase, and these emerging subgroups (including ethnic ones) may resort to antisemitism and legitimize it even more. The question whether antisemitism might strengthen Jewish commitment is complicated. Most probably, the prevalent pattern of American Judaism will shift from "private" to "public" Judaism. Sensitivity towards Jewish particularism and rituals will increase, and the rate of intermarriage will drop.
