Abstract:
Interprets the introduction of ghettos in early modern Italy as a manifestation of the commonly shared desire to put an end to the Jewish presence within Christian society - to draw a clear line of demarcation between Jews and Christians. The epoch of the Counter-Reformation ended the medieval balance between Jews and Christians in society; Christians could not tolerate the cultural differences of Jews. All the layers of society, from humanists to clerics, feared Judaizing, which they conceived of as religious propaganda, physical infection by Jews, moral contamination (e.g. through moneylending), etc. During the Counter-Reformation, ghettoization was seen as a better alternative than expulsion; it even gave the Jews a greater degree of freedom.
