Abstract:
Describes the background to the pogroms of 1905: the oppression and poverty of the Jews, who were nevertheless reputed to have amassed riches by exploitation of the Russians; ignorance and religious fanaticism; antisemitic texts from Western Europe, including "The Speech of the Chief Rabbi", a forerunner of the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion"; and government propaganda against the "Jewish revolution". Antisemitic rabblerousers called for attacks on the Jews as a patriotic act, and the mob believed that the pogroms were sanctioned by the authorities, who indeed looked on passively. To the lust for violence and destruction was soon added lust for pillage of Jewish property. Brings quotes from descriptions of the pogroms, especially that of Kishinev (1903), by Jewish and Christian contemporaries. The pogroms led many Jews to join the Zionists, the Bund, or Russian revolutionary parties, as well as to form organizations for self-defense.
