Abstract:
Discusses Llull's "art" of missionizing as an original method of argumentation, meant to facilitate conversion to Christianity in the 13th century. Although Llull's missionary work was intended mostly for the conversion of Muslims, he also focused on conversion of Jews, as reflected in books such as his "Libre del gentil" and "Liber predicationis". Llull did not think of Judaism as a frozen biblical relic, as did his predecessors, but related to post-biblical Jewish thought (the Talmud, rabbinical commentaries, Kabbalah) in order to refute the Jews' beliefs and attain more credibility and persuasion. He thus represented a more serious challenge for Spanish Jewry at that time.
