Abstract:
In response to the controversy raised by Walser's 1998 speech, in which he rejected the idea of a national Holocaust monument in Berlin, argues that Walser was not attempting to diminish the Holocaust nor is he an antisemite. Rather, he was protesting against the politically correct exploitation of public ritual and monumentalizing as a way of avoiding meaningful personal engagement with issues like that of responsibility for the Holocaust. Walser prefers remembering via introspection, aided by individual personal testimonies.
