Abstract:
The Jews have failed to realize that antisemitism in Germany continues to exist not in spite of Auschwitz but because of it, because it makes people feel guilty. Antisemites, on the other hand, do not realize that one can (and, in fact, must) condemn Auschwitz, even while continuing to be antisemitic. Rainer Werner Fassbinder, who himself was probably not an antisemite, has expressed this clearly in his play "Garbage, the City and Death". The play has served as a catalyst for antisemitic reactions, described as a demand for "normalcy" and the ending of the "taboo on antisemitism". These reactions stem from the young German's need for reconciliation with the past, and are also expressed in equations between Israel and Nazism which help clear the Germans of guilt and make it again possible to dislike Jews in Germany.
