Abstract:
Presents a reading of "Esh kodesh" by Rabbi Kalonimus Kalmish Shapira, a collection of Sabbath and holiday discourses written in Nazi-occupied Warsaw, as historical evidence and as a theological treatise attempting to explain the Holocaust and its meaning. Remarkably, Shapira did not resort to traditional Jewish theodicy in his discourses. "Esh kodesh" sheds much light on the social and psychological strategies employed by a faith community in coping with Nazi oppression.
