Suffering in rabbinical literature
Abstract:
A lecture delivered on Yom Hashoah in Jerusalem, 1981. Analyzes excerpts from the writings of the hasidic rabbi Kalonymos Kalman Shapira, from his book "Esh kodesh", written between 1939-42 in occupied Warsaw and in the ghetto, until he was deported to a death camp. At first, the rabbi saw the Jews' suffering as a way to mend the world and to bring them closer to God and to the redemption. But as the situation became increasingly worse, he came to believe that God, too, was suffering. There was no longer a question of justification, but rather of sanctification - the suffering of the Jewish people sanctified God, and God's suffering sanctified the people.
