Abstract:
Discusses Spiegel's essay "Me-agadot ha-akedah" (1950, published in English as "The Last Trial, " 1967) as not only a work of scholarship related to medieval Jewish literature (ostensibly a preface to the lamentation written by Ephraim of Bonn sometime after the Second Crusade of 1146) but also a response to the Holocaust. Spiegel shows how many midrashim have highlighted the idea that Isaac was not spared, but killed twice. The graphic details reflect the Jewish experience of the Crusades. Shows how Spiegel viewed Christianity as having absorbed many features of pagan antiquity. In the immediate postwar period, Spiegel was indirectly condemning not only Christianity but Western civilization in general.
