Abstract:
Discusses the reactions of French and immigrant Jews to the assassination of Symon Petlyura by Samuel Schwarzbard in Paris in May 1926. Although both groups rallied behind the Russian-born, naturalized Schwarzbard, the affair, which lasted until the end of 1927, did not reinforce Jewish unity. Compares the presentation of Schwarzbard as an assimilated Jew in the French-language Jewish press to his image as a symbol of the oppressed Jewish people in the Yiddish press. While French Jews viewed the assassination in the context of the general history of World War I, immigrant Jews saw it as a continuation of the Dreyfus and Beilis affairs. Analyzes, also, reactions of the two communities to French antisemitism, non-Jewish Ukrainian expatriates, and the pogroms in Ukraine between 1918-20. Concludes that the case illustrates their mutual lack of understanding.
